HISTORY OF THE DEVELOPMENT The site was originally considered ideal for the creation of a magazine depot ("being cheap and at a considerable distance from any respectable house") so three magazines, together with ancillary buildings and the perimeter wall, were built between 1814 and 1816. It was extended by the Royal Engineers in 1856 to accommodate nearly 50 thousand barrels of gunpowder for the Royal Navy and was supplied by sea being close to the Royal Navy dockyard at Portsmouth and on the opposite side of Southampton Water and its historic port.
The facility was used to capacity during the Napoleonic and Crimean Wars and in both the Great War and the Second World War. "The Armoury" is one of the three original magazines to survive. (the other early magazines were destroyed in June 1940 by German bombers). The Admiralties use of the facility declined steeply after 1945 and the depot finally closed on 12th November 1961.
The site was designated a conservation area in 1997 to provide protection to the walls marking the extent of the demolished magazines, the sea wall, perimeter wall and the walls to the former canal of 1814-15 and are now listed at grade 2
There is a promenade to Southampton Water - an important open space with stunning views of the cruise ships and docks and backed by the continuous frontage wall bounding the magazine compounds. The sea wall, part original, part rebuilt - is a key landscape feature and a charming approach to the site is along Magazine Lane which still retains the character of a narrow country lane with the original accommodation buildings on one side and the creek on the other.
